Protecting Your Carpet From Christmas Trees
If you have an artificial tree than you do not have much to worry about. However, if you get a real Christmas tree, then the tree and your carpet will require a little upkeep.
Once you bring your tree home, fit it into your tree stand. If the tree came with one, then you are done. Next you will want to place a tree skirt around the base of the tree. It is both decorative and functional, as it will help protect the carpeting underneath the tree. The Christmas tree base usually doubles as a water reservoir to hold water to keep the tree fresh longer. One of your maintenance duties will be to add water daily as needed. Do not overflow the tree stand, as it will spill onto your carpeting and create a damp area. If not taken care of, mildew and mold will develop. You can read about it in one of my previous post. As your tree dries out, it will begin to drop needles. Needles for the most part just need to be vacuumed up.
If you have indoor cats or dogs, they will more than likely fall in love with the tree. They will sleep around it, play under it, climb it, attack it, and of course mark their territory. If your pet decides to leave their scent on the tree, hopefully the majority of it will reach the tree skirt. The tree skirt can easily be thrown in the washing machine.
